Neuro Note 6
How Did I Come Out of Guillain–Barré SyndromeIn
In the TedTalk, Shruti Jain talked about when she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). GBS is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks nerve that carry signals to the brain. This causes degeneration of the myelin sheath ad results in peripheral nerve system (brain and spinal cord) damage. Symptoms include weakness and tingling the lower extremities, respiratory issues, bladder control issues. double vision, pain, and fatigue. This disease is at its worst in the first 2-3 weeks so the patient experiences severe pain and weakness and is at risk for contractures and respiratory dysfunction.
Shruti Jain says that she believes that everything happens for a reason and the days she spent in the emergency room made her realize her passion. She would deal with her pain by making jokes about her surroundings and with her doctors. Jain talks about one day that she danced beside her ventilator because she her heart told her to "show some belly moves" and her doctors joined her. Even while on her ventilator and in so much pain, she showed so much care and kindness towards others. Although Jain always thought she wanted to be a doctor, she eventually learned that she wanted to be a philanthropist because she wanted to seek deeper than curing physical sickness. She wanted to work with others in healing mental and emotionally health as well. Many illnesses effect mental health just as much as they effect physical health and it is important to have someone who you can work with while going through tough times. Shruti Jain is able to empathize with those who are diagnosed with GBS and her presence keeps people around her smiling and cheerful.
I chose this Ted Talk as part of my assignment because I was interested in hearing about GBS from a patients point of view. It is inspiring to hear about all the positive ways Jain found to cope with her pain and, even at one of her lowest points, she was still caring about others and trying to make them happy. I loved how she was able to find her passion of caring for others and raising awareness for this disease. I recommend this Ted Talk to anyone wanting to hear the story of someone experiencing GBS.
